Smoktech SiD First Thoughts

The Smoktech SID is yet another variable voltage/variable power tube mod. You can read the specs elsewhere, but here are my impressions, having just received mine today.


The matte aluminum finish is great, as is the weight. It doesn’t feel or look cheap, but it is significantly lighter than my Vamo V4 and Lambo V4. The screen is a nice looking OLED display, and all actions are performed with one button. This makes it a bit more of a chore to make some adjustments/see some info, but it does make for a nice clean look. And, for the most part, you’re probably not adjusting it all day long anyway.

When I saw the photos of this device, I was thrilled to see that the top connector skirt/trim ring was channeled for air flow. And, in fact, it is. Unfortunately though, although they addressed air flow issues, the center pin of the 510 connector is not spring loaded. As a result some devices (for example the UDCT/Artemas locking tanks) will not make a connection. Maybe one day, someone will address both connection and air flow on the same device. I’m not holding my breath.

The battery cap spring is about as cheap/thin as you could get, and still call it a spring. And, the cap threading itself is awful. I didn’t have an issues with fit or performance using my Panasonic CGR18650CG batteries, and I would imagine most 18650′s would fit.

There’s a bit of rattle from the button. It’s not going to fall out, but it will rotate.

I paid about $52 for mine (tube only) after a discount code.  I paid $26.99 for my Vamo from VaporBreak (though I had to wait about 20 days to get it from China). To summarize, I’d say that even at the same price, the Vamo (to me) seems like the better deal. At $26.99 for the Vamo, it’s a no-brainer: I’d get the Vamo.

So, there’s nothing that disgusts me about the SiD. If you’re the type of person that wants to add another relatively inexpensive tube mod to their collection, it’s decent. Variable voltage and wattage, a nice look, nice display, and it doesn’t feel like a boat anchor in your hand. On the other hand, if you are looking for your first “advanced” PV/mod, I wouldn’t make it this one.
